ECB hires ICL-linked Mushtaq

In a potentially confrontational move with the BCCI, the England and Wales Cricket Board has appointed the rebel Indian Cricket League-linked former Pakistan leg spinner Mushtaq Ahmed as a spin bowling coach in a consultancy role.

Mushtaq, currently a member of the Lahore Badshahs team in the ongoing ICL T20 tournament in India, is set to severe his ties with ICL by taking appropriate steps to take up his new role with the ECB, a media release from the English Board said on Friday.

"The 38-year-old former Pakistan and Sussex leg-spinner will work for ECB on a consultancy basis and his role will include working with the spinners in the England Test and One-Day squads, the England Performance Programme and Elite Player Development Programmes," the ECB said in a statement.

Mushtaq has recently retired from first class cricket and had represented Pakistan in 52 Tests, taking 185 wickets, and 144 ODIs (161 wickets), besides turning out for his country in four World Cups.

For now the ICL is adopting a wait and watch attitude with the Badshah's team, led by former Pakistan captain Inzamam-Ul-Haq, traveling from Ahmedabad to Delhi, according to its spokesperson.

"The team is travelling and is set to reach Delhi later tonight. We will take it up (with Mushtaq) once he reaches Delhi", the spokesperson said.

The leg-spinner, a member of the victorious 1992 Pakistan World Cup team, can now accompany the England touring side to India in November-December to play seven ODIs and two Tests against the hosts.
