India, Aus 'A' look for national caps

A three-day cricket match between 'A' teams of India and Australia gets underway here on Wednesday with players of both sides looking to come out with impressive performance to brighten their prospects of getting into the national squads.

S Badrinath-led home team has in its ranks the likes of Parthiv Patel (Vice-Captain), Virat Kohli, Mohammed Kaif, Robin Uthappa, Piyush Chawla and S Sreesanth.

Simon Katich-captained Australia will play another three-day game in Hyderabad which would be followed by a tri-angular series, involving Sri Lanka to be played in Hyderabad and Chennai.

"It will be a good series. Top teams in the world like Australia and New Zealand will be playing. It will be competitive and it is up to us to raise the stakes with good performances", Badrinath said on Tuesday.

"We know a few players in their (Australia A) side but then we will get a fair idea in the match".

On Sreesanth missing practice sessions, coach Dav Whatmore said, "He has got a stiff back and we are doing all that we can to get him back. He is an important player not just for India 'A' but also for the country."

According to Katich, the two three-day games would be a great platform to push for national selection for the series against India in October.

"We have four quick and three spinners and the selectors obviously want to look at a few players for the touring party in October," he said, noting that the national side now had no Shane Warne, Adam Gilchrist, Glen McGrath, Justin Langer and Damien Martyn.
