After a sensational win over Pakistan, Indians were humbled by the Black Caps. At the Wanderers Stadium in Johannesburg, Dhoni perhaps made a wrong call and invited New Zealand to bat first.
Brendon McCullum, Craig McMillan and Jacob Oram took their score to a massive 190 runs. When India came out to chase, it was Kiwi captain Daniel Vettori who took charge. With some exceptional left-arm spin, the bespectacled spinner tried tackling the belligerent Indian batsmen.
Openers Gautam Gambhir and Virender Sehwag gave India a flying start and added 76 runs in just 5.4 overs before Oram dismissed the latter for 40 runs. From there on, Vettori took on. He not only choked the run-flow but also kept striking. His first victim was Robin Uthappa who had a soft dismissal. Dhoni joined Gambhir and the duo added 27 runs, but Vettori struck again and the latter perished.
Yuvraj Singh's poor form continued and he could make just 5 runs. Vettori's exploits, supported well by other bowlers, saw India falling short by 10 runs. It was a much-needed jolt to pull India out of their comfort zone.
