Mascarenhas stars in easy England warm-up win

Dimitri Mascarenhas lashed 84 not out off 55 balls as England defeated a West Indies Players' Association XI by 51 runs in a limited-overs match on Saturday.

It's the only warmup match before the one-day series against West Indies starting on Friday. The teams play a one-off Twenty20 on Sunday.

Allrounder Mascarenhas' half century, which was spiced with nine fours and two sixes, spurred England to 299-8 off 50 overs. Opener Ravi Bopara (56) and stand-in captain Ian Bell (55) helped anchor the top order.

The WIPA XI was bowled out for 248 off 43.4 overs.

Samuel Badree topscored with 84 not out from No. 9 while Kenroy Williams contributed 60. The pair revived the home team's hopes with an eighth-wicket stand of 114 after it slumped to 100-7 halfway through the innings.

Fast bowler Steve Harmison took four wickets but went for 59 runs off 8.4 overs. Fellow pacers James Anderson (3-47) and Amjad Khan (2-28) supported well.

England rested captain Andrew Strauss, Stuart Broad, Paul Collingwood, Kevin Pietersen and Andrew Flintoff.

Wicketkeeper Steve Davies was promoted to open the batting but made just 2 as England wobbled early.

Bell and Bopara steadied the innings with confident half centuries that set the stage for Mascarenhas' late-order spree.

The WIPA XI was rocked early as the England pace trio sliced through the top order.

Only West Indies batsman Lendl Simmons, who hit two sixes off Harmison in 30, made any impression.

But Badree, more known for his legspin, and Williams, gave England a wakeup call with their enterprising late-order rally.

Anderson returned to claim Williams, and Harmison wrapped up the match with the wickets of the Nos. 10 and 11.

Scores:

England 299-8 off 50 overs (Dimitri Mascarenhas 84 not out, Ravi Bopara 56, Ian Bell 55; Atiba Allert 3-59, Lendl Simmons 2-44, Ryan Hurley 2-74), def. WIPA Select 248 off 43.4 overs (Samuel Badree 84 not out, Kenroy Williams 60; Steve Harmison 4-59, James Anderson 3-47, Amjad Khan 2-28) by 51 runs.
