ICC should handle security independently: Steve Davis

Australian umpire Steve Davis, who survived last week's terrorist attack in Pakistan, has urged the ICC to take full control of security during all future cricket tours instead of handing the responsibility to host boards.

Davis, along with other match officials, including fellow umpire Simon Taufel and English match referee Chris Broad, was caught in the Lahore attack in which 12 gunmen opened fire at the Sri Lankan team convoy near the Gaddafi stadium, injuring six cricketers and killing eight people.

The 56-year-old umpire, who has till date officiated in 17 Tests and 82 ODIs, in his report on the incident said he will recommend the ICC to put in place independent security arrangements.

"If you leave the security arrangements to the home board...there's a vested interest in that home board getting that series going ahead, either consciously or sub-consciously.

"A recommendation will be to have some independence in security systems and security arrangements," Davis was quoted as saying by 'The Australian'.

"That's the only way I can see it running properly because without that independence, you are at the say-so of whoever is organising security," he added.

Davis also revealed that the security cover given to them in Lahore was much thinner as compared to the security in Karachi the week before.
